Clean, Grey, and Black Water Damage

11/22/2021 (Permalink)

The proper cleanup and safety procedures associated with the different type of water contamination for that reason, call the professional.

When water damage occurs there can be different types of water. To start there are three different types of water. Clean water, greywater and black water. Knowing the difference can help when trying to remove water damage.

“Clean” water is free of contaminants and is not the type to pose an immediate threat to your health, much like its name infers. This water can come from:

Broken water lines

Malfunctioning appliances

Toilet holding tanks

Snow melt and rainwater

Cleanup will be the easiest for damage from this type of water damage since there are fewer microbes living in the water. But after a 48-hour period and contact with the surfaces of buildings, clean water can change to category two, which is gray water.

“Gray” water is where water damage cleanup and restoration can become a bit more complicated. It may pose a health risk due to chemical or biological contamination. That slight contamination in gray water means that it will have to be properly and thoroughly treated before safe consumption.

Gray water is a product of dishwashers, aquariums, showers, etc. Also, the 48-hour exposure time applies here as well, with gray water turning into black water if not treated.

“Black” water presents a hazard and is the most serious of the three classifications because it is considered highly contaminated by harmful chemicals and biological matter. This includes floodwaters containing soil and all sewage waters.

Sewage carries with it contamination caused by microbes, including bacteria, protozoans, molds, fungi and more—many of these can be harmful to humans.

Diseases that can be transmitted by black water are:

Cholera

Typhoid

Hepatitis

Gastroenteritis-type illness

When dealing with water damage you want to leave it up to the professionals when trying to get it cleaned up. Here at SERVPRO of Kempsville/Military Circle were always ready to help as were open 24/7 and 365 days a year.

What To Do Before A Storm

10/13/2021 (Permalink)

Be prepared for the storm. Know your evacuation plan if needed.

As we enter hurricane season, we should always try to be ready for the storm before it comes. Likely what happens when the news says a hurricane is coming is people like to stock up on water, canned goods, flashlights, and batteries. Waiting until last minute can have you going crazy going from store to store due to the items being sold out. Here are a couple things you can do before the storm comes.

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm
  • Postpone outdoor activities
  • Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile. Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard- topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
  • Unplug and electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

Hurricane season is June 1st- November 30th, try to follow all these safety tips to have a safe outcome. If by chance you do experience storm damage of any sort you can always give SERVPRO of Kempsville/Military Circle as we are open 24/7, 365 days a year.

What To Do DURING A Storm

10/13/2021 (Permalink)

Be prepared for a storm, have backup supplies, and check with our local authorities.

Being part of a hurricane can be very scary for some, and new as some people have never experienced a hurricane. If you live on the east coast you know we experience hurricanes here and there but someone who just moved here could have no idea. Being prepared for the storm always has a better outcome than not being prepared. Here is a list of things you can do to make sure you are safe and prepared for any storm that may come your way.

  •     Use your battery operated NOAA Weather Radio for updates from local officials
  • Avoid contact with coded phones. Use a corded telephone only for emergencies. Cordless and cellular telephones are safe to use.
  • Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords. Unplug appliances and other electrical items such as computers and turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage.
  • Avoid contact with plumbing. Do not wash your hands, do not take a shower, do not wash dishes, and do not do laundry. Plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.
  • Stay away from windows and doors, and stay away off porches
  • Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls
  • Avoid natural lightning rods such as tall, isolated tree in an open area
  • Avoid hilltops, open fields, the beach or a boat on the water
  • Take shelter in a sturdy building. Avoid isolated sheds or other small structures in open areas
  • Avoid contact with anything metal
  • If you are driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside the vehicle.

If you experience any type of storm damage you can always give us a call at 757-479-4447 and we will be there as soon as we can. We are open 24/7, 365 days a week and ready to help you as soon as you call.

Flood Damage

10/13/2021 (Permalink)

Call for help after storm damage. Call for a professional.

This week it looks all gloomy and rainy no matter what area you live in the United States there is no way of moving around a flood. Here are a few tips when a flood may occur.

-Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.

-Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are riding rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

If a flood does occur in your area you can always call SERVPRO of Kempsville/Military Circle as we will gladly help. We are open 24/7, and 365 days a year.

How To Be Ready For Any Disaster

10/13/2021 (Permalink)

Fooding can be scary, be prepared, following the recommendations from your local authorities is important.

Right now were in a weird time of the year, one day it feels like summer and the next day it feels like fall. One day its so nice and beautiful and the next day it's humid and pouring rain. A rainstorm, thunderstorm, flood, or even hurricane is common to occur in the summertime especially on the East Coast. Here are a few tips when a small or large storm comes by.

  • Always keep a battery-powered radio in your home so that you can tune to radio stations if you lose electricity. Check or change the batteries frequently.

  • Keep a flashlight in an easily accessible spot on every floor of your home. Check the batteries monthly, and replace them as needed.

  • Keep a supply of candles on hand for power failures.

  • As a safety precaution before leaving the house on vacation, unplug all electrical appliances except for those lights connected to automatic timers.

  • If you live in a storm-prone area, nail down roof shingles or use adequate adhesive to keep them from blowing off in a violent wind. For roofs with shingles that are not the seal-down type, apply a little dab of roofing cement under each tab.

  • A lightning-protection system should offer an easy, direct path for the bolt to follow into the ground and thus prevent injury or damage. Grounding rods (at least two for a house) should be placed at opposite corners of the house.

  • Don't go out during a hurricane unless you have to; however, if flooding threatens, seek high ground, and follow the instructions of civil defense personnel.

  • When a major storm is imminent, close shutters, board windows, or tape the inside of larger panes with an "X" along the full length of their diagonals. Even a light material like masking tape may give the glass the extra margin of strength it needs to resist cracking
  • When a tornado threatens, leave windows slightly ajar.

  • The basement is not a good shelter during a tornado -- it's too close to gas pipes, sewer pipes, drains, and cesspools. A better shelter would be underground, far from the house (in case the roof falls) and away from the gas and sewer systems. Let all family members know where the shelter is.

  • Keep an eye on large trees -- even healthy ones -- that could damage your house if felled in a storm. Cut them back, if necessary.

Food After A Fire

10/12/2021 (Permalink)

Call the professionals who know what can be salvaged and not salvaged after a kitchen fire.

Some wonder what food can be saved and eaten after a fire.  It's understandable to want to save as much as possible and not let food go to waste.  However, it must be taken into account that food, opened or unopened, do become contaminated by fires and can cause health effects.

Unfortunately, not only can food be affected by fire directly, but can also become affected by the water, chemicals, smoke and by heat damages caused by fires.  The toxic fumes from fires also contaminates the food.  Strong smoke odor or rotten food odor is a sign the food is no good.

The smoke, soot, toxic fumes along with other contaminates in the fire permeate through the air which taints the food.  The food can be fresh, packaged, sealed and even in the refrigerator or freezer and can still become contaminated because the seals are not all completely air tight.  Even canned food, food in jars, bottles can be affected by the heat of the fire causing the food to slowly cook within which can be harmful to eat.

It's not recommended to try and eat the food to see if it's good or not.  It's highly recommended to throw away and dispose of food that have been in or around a fire to avoid getting sick.

Restore Your Carpet Back With These Tips

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

Give us a call at 757-479-4447

Vacuum often
To protect your carpet, vacuum entrance areas and high-traffic areas twice a week and the rest of the carpeting at least weekly. Oily soils attract oily soils, and frequent vacuuming will reduce soil buildup.

Start with a clean bag or filter
A dirty bag, dirt cup or filter can cut a vacuum’s suction power in half. The main reason bagless vacuums stop working is that the filters aren’t changed often enough. Replace or wash (if possible) the filters on bagless vacuums every three months. Replace vacuum bags when they’re three-quarters full.

Vacuum at the right speed
Vacuum slowly enough to get out as much dirt as possible. Make one quick pass over low-traffic areas and two slow passes over high-traffic areas. Two slow passes removes ground-in dirt more effectively than several fast passes.

Use walk-off mats
Use walk-off mats inside and out to keep dirt off the carpeting. Coarse-textured mats outside your doors remove soil and will make a how to clean carpet project easier. Water-absorbent mats inside prevent wet shoes on the carpeting.

Here at SERVPRO of Kempsville/Military Circle we offer four different cleaning services depending on the soil level. Give us a call for any answers you would like to know at 757-479-4447, available 24/7!

Steps to prevent mold

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

steps to remove mold before it becomes a proplem

Mold is everywhere around us and it can be particularly stressful to find out you have a mold problem in your home. Depending on the area and the cause of the problem, it is often a costly and time-consuming remediation process. However, you are not powerless to stop it and you can take the following mold prevention steps.

    Inspect Pipes Regularly

One of the biggest culprits of mold problems is water damage from leaky pipes or roofs. No matter how seemingly small, all leaks need to be properly fixed. Monitor them closely and call in professionals if needed. They can measure the water pressure within your pipes and reduce the stress on them by making adjustments.

    Monitor Humidity

Mold grows especially well in humid environments. It’s important that your home doesn’t have higher than 50% humidity in any room. Most home repair stores sell hygrometers, which tell you the humidity level indoors. These levels can change throughout the day, so take several measurements in each room. Dehumidifiers and air conditioning can help lower levels, and any room with high humidity should have ventilation added.

Pay Attention to Bathrooms and Kitchens

Bathrooms and kitchens are particularly susceptible to mold growth. Hot showers or steamy dishwashing creates a perfect environment for water condensation to build up on the walls or floors. Avoid carpeting these areas, since they hold onto moisture and make it difficult to spot mold problems below the surface. Remove any visible mold on shower doors or walls using a bleach, vinegar or borax solution.

    Check the Basement

Because they are below the surface, basement walls tend to collect moisture from the ground and rain. Regularly monitor basement walls for any sign of leaks or water damage. If water has leaked into the area, remove anything that can’t be thoroughly dried, such as carpet or upholstery.

Sewage Damage Classifications

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

Sewage cleaning requires a professional.

Sewage damage cleanup comes with a whole host of other challenges than a typical water damage cleanup. All water damage cleanups are considered emergency restoration work, but a sewage damage situation has a lot of moving parts that need to be taken care of beforehand in order to properly handle this type of situation. In Virginia, there are various situations where sewage damage can occur. Sewage is a prominent problem in our Coastal Virginia area since we are surround by many rivers, bays and the Atlantic Ocean. What are the differences between a water damage and a sewage job? There are two types of sewage damages: one has to deal with black water and the other is gray water.

Black water can potentially contain many harmful contaminants. This type of sewage would consist of raw sewage's which may be contaminated with harmful bacteria, mold, viruses, and microbes that are harmful to humans. Some diseases that can coincide with black water are cholera and hepatitis. Many of the symptoms involve vomiting, fever, and flu-like symptoms. These diseases can spread quickly in our area. Another type of sewage damage is known as gray water.

Gray water has similar health risks as black water, but it also contains chemical contamination. This type of sewage damage can be caused by dishwashers and washing machines, all of which are found in homes throughout Coastal Virginia. In many cases, gray water damage needs to be handled in a similar manner as black water damage cases. Due to the sewage containing many factors associated with chemicals, it is important to understand the necessity of cleaning this damage up in a thorough manner.

One damage that is not considered sewage is clean water damage. Clean water damage does not pose an immediate risk to an individual. These situations generally occur from a sink overflowing, waterline breaking, or a leaky roof. Clean water damage can, however, turn into gray water over time as it is exposed to elements. If clean water comes in contact with porous materials, it can cause mold to grow; in the case of drywall, the contaminated drywall would need to be removed.

SERVPRO of Kempsville/Military Circle has many years of experience in handling all varieties of water damage claims, including sewage damage. Our professional crews servicing the Kempsville/Military Circle area can professionally remove the contaminated water from your property. If water damage is present, call our office 757.479.4447 and we can remove and restore your property to its original condition.

As many states are opening up after COVID-19 people are still worried and staying home. So what can we do for your business? Do you know how clean is enough for your customers to have trust in you to go back? How clean is clean exactly?

There are three different types of clean. Those three are sterile, disinfected, and sanitary.

Sterile is the removal of 100% of soils and microorganisms.

Disinfected is when at least 99% of the soils are microorganisms are removed from a surface.

Sanitary is when soils and microorganisms are removed to a point that general good health is protected.

What We Do On A Regular Basis

Why SERVPRO

Before working at SERVPRO I had never heard of the company, I had never had any reason to call SERVPRO or any other restoration company. I was lucky enough to never experience a fire, water damage, or even storm damage. If I were to experience something I would have been so lost. So here is a blog to help you out.

So what is SERVPRO?

Here at SERVPRO we are a restoration company, and offer many different services.

Here is a list of things our company does on a day-to-day basis when dealing with restoration.

  • Fire, Smoke and Soot
  • When dealing with fire damage this is the process our technicians will go through to determine what type of fire took place and determine what proper restoration will go through.
  • Water removal and dehumidification
  • This process is done when there is unknown water damage and our technicians are finding the source of water. Our technicians use drying equipment that controls the temperature and humidity, minimizing secondary damage.
  • Mold mitigation and remediation
  • This is when mold appears in your home or business and our technicians work to control mold contaminants while protecting the health and safety of building occupants
  • Catastrophic storm response
  • Storms like Hurricane Isabel, and Hurricane Irene SERVPRO is always “ready for whatever happens.” SERVPRO has mobilized teams across the country to travel as needed to support large storm events.
  • Move outs and contents restoration
  • A move-out is the moving of a customers content to a secured storage location. For example, if a fire were to occur we would take all the belongings of a customer to clean. This helps reduce the risk of something getting damaged.

This is just a list of things we do on an everyday basis for restoration needs. Hopefully this list helps you understand more if you were to experience a catastrophe. If you have any questions you can always call us at 757-479-4447

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY FROM EVERYONE HERE AT SERVPRO OF KEMPSVILLE/MILITARY CIRCLE!!!

Happy 4th of July from everyone here at SERVPRO of Kempsville. With the new normal of social distancing,  and events being cancelled most firework shows won't be going on this year. In that case, most of us will try to light fireworks on our own. Unfortunately, in some cases fireworks have caused fire damage to some homes. Fireworks cause about 18,500 fires per year. Here are few things you can avoid when handling fireworks.

  • Never allow children to play or ignite fireworks
  • Never try to re-light fireworks or pickup fireworks that have not initiated fully
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose near in case of a fire or any other mishap
  • Make sure fireworks are legal in our area before buying them
  • Light fireworks one by one and step back after lighting one.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at someone
  • Never place a part of your body over a firework when lighting
  • Never put them in your pocket or shoot them at glass or metal.

If any case you encounter fire damage due to fireworks you can always give us a call AFTER you call 911 and have the fire put out. We will gladly help with any fire damage here at SERVPRO of Kempsville/Military Circle. Happy 4th of July, and use fireworks with caution!

Carpet Cleaning Professional VS DIY

Professional carpet cleaning VS DIY carpet cleaning

Here at SERVPRO of Kempsville/Military Circle we do a lot of carpet cleaning. Many of us out there just say "I can do it myself" with the carpet cleaners sold in stores, but in reality having it done professionally is the best route to take.

Our technicians know exactly how to remove the excess water when cleaning, and when trying to do it yourself you could leave your carpet over saturated. Over saturation can lead to a nasty mildew smell, and mold.

Another reason to get it done professionally is because our equipment can remove much more soil than any store bought carpet cleaner. Depending on how heavy the soil level is will determine how our technicians will carpet clean your carpet.

Our technicians have 4 different ways of cleaning starting with Bonnet Cleaning. Bonnet cleaning is for a more light soil level. The carpet is lightly sprayed with cleaning solution and we use a rotary extractor with a "bonnet" pad to pull the dirt.

Next is hot water extraction or deluxe precondition and rinse for a more medium soil level. Depending if its more on the light or heavy side of soil will determine how our technicians will clean.

Lastly, for a heavier soil level is showcase premier cleaning. The carpet is shampooed, and rise and extracted for a deep cleaning.

In that case, going professional would be the best option. You would be surprised grime, dirt, and even germs build up in carpets. We recommend getting a carpet cleaning about once a year to have your carpet have a longer life span.

You can call us at 757-479-4447 to get an estimate for a carpet cleaning service.

One City Marathon

Vanessa giving out some goodies!

Over the weekend SERVPRO of Kempsville/Military Circle had the pleasure of participating in a huge city marathon. The marathon is actually 26.2 miles long, those runners ran almost all around key areas of Newport News. The marathon started near Newport News park, and ended on 25th street. How crazy is that? Thats almost a 20 minute drive, imagine how long it took those participants to run it! One of our own marketing representatives, Vanessa was out there since before 7am to give out cookies and Gatorade for the runners. Of course she was there until the last runner was able to get some treats from us. SERVPRO of Kempsville/Military Circle was able to participate with the Villanueva Agency Ltd. - Nationwide Insurance. We had such a fun time and cant wait for the next marathon to take place!
