Frozen Pipes Can Lead Pipes To Burst

1/9/2018 (Permalink)

Busted pipes is an enormous inconvenience and hazard. There are a number of potential reasons why pipes inside a home can experience too much stress, and burst. This time of year, the main reason why is due to extreme cold temperatures.

But Why? Cold water can cause serious issues when is affects the water supply pipes. Ice has more volume than water so when water freezes inside a pipe, it expands and increases pressure in the pipe. The building pressure needs to escape so it literally burst right out of the pipe.

How can I prevent frozen pipes?

Keep garage doors closed, especially if they are water supply lines in the garage.

Open kitchen and cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.

Let the cold water drip from a faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe even a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.

Keep the thermostat to the same temperature during day and night.

If you plan to be away during the cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

For the long term, add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in those areas.

But, if those pipes due decide to burst and cause water damage, you can always call SERVPRO of Kempsville/Military Circle at 757-479-4447. We will gladly help, and make it seem "Like it never even happened."

It it extremely important to use an IICRC Certified company to perform water restoration.

An IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) Restoration Company has specialty trained technicians who are educated in water restoration. Our water restoration trained technicians are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week because water damage never happens at a convenient time.

The damage water can do to a home is often underestimated and what was just some water on the floor can escalate into secondary damage like mold and wood damage. The source of the water can hold unseen dangers and put your family at risk.

Once our water restoration technician arrives at your home, they will begin the drying process to prevent secondary damage that comes from water sitting around for extended periods of time. Our technicians will remove all wet and un-salvageable items from your home. Organic material such as drywall and carpet padding will hold moisture and foster the growth of mold.

Your home will be dried using a combination of dehumidifiers and air movers which assist the dehumidifiers to work efficiently. The quicker your home is dried out, the quicker you and your family can return to your routine.
