What To Do Before A Storm

10/13/2021 (Permalink)

Be prepared for the storm. Know your evacuation plan if needed.

As we enter hurricane season, we should always try to be ready for the storm before it comes. Likely what happens when the news says a hurricane is coming is people like to stock up on water, canned goods, flashlights, and batteries. Waiting until last minute can have you going crazy going from store to store due to the items being sold out. Here are a couple things you can do before the storm comes.

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm
  • Postpone outdoor activities
  • Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile. Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard- topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
  • Unplug and electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

Hurricane season is June 1st- November 30th, try to follow all these safety tips to have a safe outcome. If by chance you do experience storm damage of any sort you can always give SERVPRO of Kempsville/Military Circle as we are open 24/7, 365 days a year.
